Immunity – You Might Not Be Able To See It

There are so many things we need to protect ourselves from. Boosting our immune system is key before and even during a health crisis.

Hold on to your hats folks, I have some facts for you about the immune system and how it works.

  • Humans have between 4,500 and 11,000 white blood cells in each microliter of blood.
  • Hundreds of millions of different B cells circulate in the body.
  • Cytotoxic immune cells are involved in both anti-infectious and anti-tumor immunity.
  • Dendritic cells are the most powerful antigen-presenting cells.
  • There are about 600 lymph nodes in the body.
  • Fever is a positive indication that the immune system is active.
  • Most of the immune cells reside in tissues and not in the blood.
  • The innate immune system provides the first point of defense against offending agents.
  • Autoimmune disorders affect about 5% of the United States population.
  • Sleep deprivation, lack of physical activity, and stress can weaken the immune system.
  • Stress has a negative effect on the immune system.
  • Laughter helps our immune system to manage stress.
  • Vitamin D is a hormone that modulates immune functions.
  • Zinc is an essential micronutrient for cell-mediated immunity.

Your immune system is a complex network of cells, tissues, and organs. Together they help the body fight infections and other diseases.

The immune system has many different parts, including:

  • Your skin, which can help prevent germs from getting into the body.
  • Mucous membranes, which are the moist, inner linings of some organs and body cavities. They make mucus and other substances which can trap and fight germs.
  • White blood cells, which fight germs.
  • Organs and tissues of the lymph system, such as the thymus, spleen, tonsils, lymph nodes, lymph vessels, and bone marrow. They produce, store, and carry white blood cells.

So what can you do to improve your immune system. Well I hope you still have a hold of your hat because here is another list to help you.

  • Get a sufficient amount of sleep
  • Follow an active daily routine
  • Maintain hygiene
  • Keep your weight under control
  • Manage your stress
  • Consume a healthy and balanced diet
  • Take supplements
  • Drink lots of water
  • Avoid eating junk food
  • Stop smoking
