When the health care system fails, what do you do?
Is it failing now? There may be some debate over that, but when you honestly look at it, the current system it isn’t working. Or you might think that using the word failing is much too harsh. There will absolutely be debate about that.
Well what does “working” mean?
Maybe you’ve never really thought about this ever before. But now you are facing this reality today. Maybe you’ve had a personal situation come up with your health or a loved ones health. And now you see things much more clearly or seeing things for the first time.
Here in Canada, like many other countries, we front-end in to the system. We pay for healthcare in our taxes daily, weekly, monthly. So when we go to receive any kind of healthcare it usually doesn’t cost us anything, financially anyway. Except maybe for a prescription.
But mostly it works in a way so that we don’t get handed an invoice, and be expected to pay after we receive regular healthcare services. For quite a while many people were just content to live with that kind of a system and many thought it worked well and supported it.
Specifically through the last 5 years, 10 years and even longer, more and more people have been noticing the growing deficits in Canadian healthcare. And what Canadians receive from it.
I am by no means any kind of an expert about this, however I truly feel it’s an important topic to really think about. But this absolutely won’t be a deep dive at all. I encourage you to really research this on your own.
I realize healthcare has gotten a lot more attention recently here in Canada and definitely around the world lately. For my international readers I would love to hear more about the healthcare system in your country. Please contact me through my website and tell me more.
I am not going to go through and list all kinds of recommendations for improvement or details on how things are failing. I will leave that up to the experts. I will provide a book suggestion for you. This one is about the Canadian medical system. It is a fascinating read and I think all Canadians would benefit by reading it.
It is called “When Politics Comes Before Patients: Why and How Canadian Medicare is Failing” by Dr. Shawn Whatley.
When you learn more about something, you are able to become an informed participant in it. More information helps you make better decisions for yourself and your family.
I would really like to just stir things up in your mind and create a conversation and get you thinking about this more, if you haven’t been already. I also realize for many of us, it’s something we think about a lot.
