Your Brain – With Depression

After all of the years I have spent going through depression, the best descriptor of my journey with depression, is that it was a fog.

Yes a fog. Sometimes it was a thick paralyzing fog, and other times it was much less thick, yet still hanging in there. A thick, foggy mess. So disorientating.

My mind was not clear. It was very muddled. But just like driving through fog, I had been living with it for quite a while before I realized it was happening.

Sometimes when driving into fog it takes a while before you can even see the clouds surrounding you. It appears so gradually. When I drive in fog, it can take a minute to even realize I am surrounded by the dense cloud.

That was the way it was for me. It seemed to have happened so suddenly, but truthfully it wasn’t sudden at all.

Can you relate? At least to the driving in fog analogy? You can be alert and paying attention but all of a sudden you realize you are in thick fog.

So what did that mean for me when I was walking through the darkness of depression? Honestly it was very disorientating and quite unsettling. My mind was never very clear.

I would have to put so much effort in to just concentrating and focusing on doing basic things, I had nothing left for anything other than that.

Over time having to concentrate and put that much effort in to things I would at any other time just taken for granted. Taken for granted how easy and effortless they were.

As I research what happens to our bodies during depression, it’s quite a bit. Everything from inflammation, oxygen restriction, connective changes and reduced functionality, brain shrinkage, and digestive issues. Yikes, that is a lot!!

I won’t go in to more detail, but just seeing that list of things, it’s not only concerning, but it really does explain a few things. Well for me anyway. Maybe you too! Depression is all encompassing to our bodies when we go through it. It impacts so much.

So friend, what about you? Have you walked through the fog of depression? Maybe you have gone through times of light fog in harder times?

Many of us are facing tough times right now from things happening in the world, our country, our community and of course our own personal lives.

These are times you need support. Friends, family and maybe a professional to help you navigate the difficult times. My prayer for you friend, is that if and when these times come in your life, that you reach out for the support you need and these foggy times don’t last long.

Hold on, I’m praying for you.
