I recently spent two mornings at the dentist getting work done. Yuck! You know there was no way that was my choice.
That has been one of my life long challenges. Needing to frequently visit and have things taken care of.
About 8 years ago I was informed that I needed quite a lot of fillings done. I was pretty frustrated and confused.
I did some digging and found a new dentist who viewed dentistry as one part of whole body health. Understanding that everything is connected and your body health history matters a lot.
I had an hour conversation with him and also his hygienist, about my health history and putting the pieces together to understand my current health situation, and what I was currently dealing with. We also came up with a plan moving forward to improve things.
It was pretty incredible to begin to realize new things I had not known or to remember things I had long forgotten.
One of the side effects from the chemotherapy drugs I had was quicker degradation of your teeth or de-mineralization or de-calcification. Of course I am sure I had likely read that in the pages of drug side effects handouts I received in 1996 before I began chemo but I had a few things on my mind, and didn’t really think about it too much and definitely didn’t remember everything listed.
I am so grateful that I was able to find a dentist who viewed his dental practice as an opportunity to provide whole body health with a dental focus, and put in the time and effort to find answers. He was so helpful. Through our conversation we were able to identify what likely the root cause or the main cause of my teeth problems.
Once you are able to find what is likely the root cause of something going on with your health, you are then able to attack it much more effectively and possibly permanently. This applies to all health not just your teeth.
My dentist gave me a product to use and I’ve tried hard to make sure I use it every day. I will admit that I am not always the best with that. But when I am diligent my dental team has noticed a significant improvement but there is more improvement needed.
Yet I still have occasional issues that come up from the decades after chemotherapy.
So friend, what am I trying to say? Just a couple things that I hope will help you or someone you know. First of all read the fine print. Well more realistically re-read the fine print. I should have gone back and known the long term side effects I may deal with, instead of just thinking it would all be over after chemotherapy ended. I wish it were that simple.
Secondly, it is critical to find medical practitioners who consider your whole body health. Also your health history in helping you with whatever medical issues you or your family might deal with. This includes everyone from your pharmacist, your family doctor to your massage therapist.
Our bodies have been beautifully created by God as a completely interconnected system. Everything affects everything else. Don’t fall in to the trap thinking that each part is completely disconnected from the other. That is just not true.
Friend, I will pray for you as you face whatever medical issue that comes up in your life, and specifically that you will be able to find a medical professional that considers the whole body to provide you with the best healthcare. We are currently in a time when finding doctors and specialists can be very difficult. I am praying that you are able to find the help you need.
And in case you were wondering, things went well at the dentist recently. Let’s just say that I am very glad that it is all over. Keeping my mouth open for that long can never end soon enough.
