Wrinkles – What are you going to do about them?

No matter who you try to fool, you can’t fool yourself when you look in the mirror and see . . . yikes . . . WRINKLES! No matter how scary they are, they didn’t just appear overnight.

Wrinkles, they will inevitably show up on your face at one point or another, it’s true. What do you see and think when you look in the mirror and see those wrinkles appear? Your response might be a negative one, just like mine.

While my first thought may not be a positive one, I do actually kind of like, well more accurately, I appreciate seeing them. Those dreaded wrinkles. But that kind of appreciation didn’t just happen overnight.

Wrinkles really tell a story. Everyone has a different story to tell. While you may not look at your face in the mirror and say, “Yup, I’ve got one thick novel written all over my face”, (cause that’s weird, and you probably aren’t as weird as me). You might see the story written in chapters.

The chapters of your life written across your face. I may not know the text of the chapters by just looking at your face, but I can see there is one to tell. (Maybe that is a odd way to think of it, but it helps me). Who knows, maybe it will help you too.

Those chapters, like where have you been? What have you done? Who have you become? What have you seen? What have you learned? In a previous blog, I had written before about sharing your personal story. I think when people learn more about what you have been through or your story, it can give more context to those little lines that show up on the outside.

Fundamentally the lapsing of time always appears on our face. As much as we fight the passage of time, we cannot stop it. Even if we fight tooth and nail. That sounds painful, so I don’t recommend it.

There are a whole bunch of artificial ways to slow down the increase of wrinkles, but no true way to completely stop them, or a way that doesn’t cost LOOOOOOOOTS of money, SO why not embrace them?

Actually the most wrinkles appear on my face when I smile. The bigger the smile, the more wrinkles. Some might choose to not smile because of that, or maybe only smile very slightly, but not me. Nope, not me. Almost all of the time I will give you a big wrinkly smile.

I actually prefer to call them laugh lines. Cause mine have shown up way more when I smile and laugh. Laugh lines just has a better ring to it than wrinkles, right? I guess that is another reason why I like them. Maybe it’s just symbolic of how I have gone through many dark times and dark days and those things just don’t disappear when I smile. In fact they provide context to my face when I smile. Despite the depression and the dark cancer days I still find joy in life. And that my friend is a choice. Finding joy every day doesn’t just happen, it’s a choice.

Those who find joy in life, don’t do it at the cost of hardship, they do it through the wisdom that comes from difficult times. Those lines on my face have so much to say. I think we earn our wrinkles. So because of that, I don’t want to hide them.

The faces God gave us are so beautiful. They have practical and kind of necessary uses like breathing and eating, but also so many other amazing things about them. Wrinkles (or laugh lines) are just one small part of our faces that makes us beautiful. When I look in the mirror I see every single wrinkle that I worked hard to earn, and each one of them tells a story, my story.

Friend, if you look in the mirror and see those dreaded wrinkles and it makes you sad. Can I encourage and pray for you to see things a little differently?
