Perspective-What Would You Say?

For anyone who has been around me long enough, and heard me talk about my health journey in any way, you have probably heard me say this, “I wouldn’t have chosen it, but I wouldn’t change it?”

What does that mean? You might be able to guess but I am going to tell you anyway. It’s really how I sum up my perspective on what I have been through, specifically about all the health stuff I’ve gone through in my life.

Like so many things in our lives, if we were to find out what is going to happen to us before it happens to us, we would never choose it. Never choose to go through the tough stuff. Makes sense right? When we are honest with ourselves we would probably always choose the easy, less painful path.

But, after going through the things that I have gone through, I can honestly say that I wouldn’t change them. I wouldn’t change the things I have gone through. That might surprise you. I might wish to change how I handled it, but not that I went through it.

Why do you think that is how I frame my difficult health journey?

Could I really say I wouldn’t change going through it? Well yes. The person I am today is because of what I have been through not in spite of what I have been through. And the choices I made along the way.

Cancer at 16.

Major surgery at 23.

Cancer at 26.

Another cancer scare and serious surgery at 33.

And more I won’t list here.

How could my perspective be I wouldn’t have chosen it but I wouldn’t change it?

How?

If you’ve followed me for long enough you will know I also talk about choice a lot.

Yes, choices. Choices again friend. You cannot get away from them.

How do you choose to view the difficulty you walk through?

Do you allow yourself to grow and mature through difficulty or do you sit in the negativity of hating that you are going through it? And the days, weeks and months after?

I do believe that nothing in our lives happens by mistake. My faith is the foundation for this perspective. And my faith got me to this point. I will openly admit that the perspective I have today was not the way I thought of everything when I was going through it.

So friend, what is your perspective? How do you see the things you have gone through? We won’t just magically choose to take a positive spin on the negative we go through, that’s not very realistic. Always remember it’s a choice. So what will you choose?

Friend, I’m praying for you as you walk through the many different roads of life and that you will choose to find a healthy perspective whatever the difficulty may be, even if it’s hard.
