Fasting (1 of 3) – What is it?

Fasting. Just what in creation are you talking about?

I think most people are likely only really familiar with fasting when it’s for a medical reason. When someone tells you that you have to. Many for a medical procedure or a more common inconvenience when you have to fast before getting blood work done.

Maybe you are running in the circles where fasting has become quite the popular thing to do. I can’t quite say it’s only just a trend right now, well maybe that’s partially true but since it’s in multiple places in the Bible, I’d say it’s been around for a very, very long time.

But can you truly say that you know what it is, how to do it and why any sane person would choose to do it? Well that last one might be the toughest to answer. Who would ever want to do that?

I think there are many more people doing this than you might think.

But if you aren’t one of those people, I’m here to fill you in on something that I’ve come to realize could just be one of the greatest game changers for people’s health.

Fasting isn’t just for certain people with certain health concerns. Every single person might find great success with this. I’m not a health professional so I won’t tell you what to do for you health, but I want to give you more information so you can make your own choices.

I’m really starting to wonder if I should just call every post make more informed choices. If you’ve stuck around with me for a while you will recognize the ideas I highlight in almost all of my posts, get more information and make choices. We all have the power to get more information and we all have the power to make choices. Easy, peasy, lemon squeezy!!

Now that your face is recoiling from the lemon reference, I will move on.

So what exactly is fasting? How do you do it? Great questions, I’m so glad you asked.

Fasting is not eating for a period of time. Groundbreaking news, I know. Don’t you feel smarter now?

I promise I’ll tell you more. Here are the basics on what happens when you do it.

Fasting for 12 hours:

  • The body starts to enter a fasted state after about 12 hours.
  • Insulin levels drop, allowing fat to be used as energy.
  • The body begins to rely on fat stores for fuel.

Fasting for 16-18 hours:

  • Autophagy kicks in. Old or damaged cells are broken down and recycled.
  • The body starts to make more ketones, which are used for energy.

Fasting for 24 hours:

  • Glycogen stores (from carbs) are depleted, and the body primarily uses fat for energy.
  • The immune system may get a boost from the removal of dysfunctional cells.

Fasting for 48-72 hours:

  • Metabolism may speed up, which can aid in weight loss.
  • Human growth hormone (HGH) levels can increase, promoting muscle maintenance.
  • The body enters deeper states of ketosis, burning fat for fuel.

This is the first post of three. Watch out for my next post where I will share, in my opinion why I think you should really consider fasting for your health and in my last post I will share how this experiment has gone for me.
