Autumn – Brace for Impact

The fall is just about here. Well some days it feels like it’s here and then other days it’s +32 in September. Maybe just here last week. I haven’t seen the s-word in the forecast yet but I know the white stuff is coming.

Do you feel like there is just something about this time of the year that makes you anticipate things picking up speed and rushing at a faster pace? Maybe like you might just need to grab on and just hang on for the ride.

We are kind of pushed into that kind of mindset since we were young children. At the end of August or beginning of September always meant back to school. Back to routine. Back to schedule and so many things going on.

Even though I am no longer going to school and haven’t been for many a moon, I can still get caught in the mind frame of taking it a bit easier in the summer and then getting ready to brace for impact once September hits and then it’s really not too much longer until December and (😱) Christmas.

I was recently speaking with someone about how Costco just seems to think we need to be slammed in the face with Christmas decorations and gift options in August. It’s a harsh reality shock that Christmas really isn’t that far away from August.

It will be here before we know it. While I do enjoy Christmas, I don’t really need to be confronted so early with the realization that it’s coming so soon.

Finishing harvest not too many years ago on our farm. This is what fall means to so many in Saskatchewan.

I don’t even have children and yet my world seems to run along the same type of schedule as anyone in school. Fall is the time to return to the normal pattern of our year.

Don’t you wish one day you would be able to just upend it all? Maybe you already have.

But there are some really exciting things to look forward to in the fall if you are like me. Tomorrow NHL regular season starts and I’m anxiously waiting for it. I am hoping to get to my 4th NHL game this season so that is a great reason for me to be ready to get onboard with the fall ramp up.

It’s really great for your mental health to have something exciting in the future to look forward to. Do you have something coming up even further down the road to circle with excitement on the calendar?

If you have something like that to get you through the whirlwind of the fall craziness that might help you survive the daily crush. If you don’t, maybe you need to find something to put on the calendar.

So wherever you land in this season, panic time or excitement as things gear up to full speed, I pray you find the time and space to enjoy where you are, where your family is at and find joy in this season and season of your life.

Let me know where you are at about this time of year. Are you hanging on for dear life or are you finding enjoyment in the season change?
