It happens every year. Yes it’s true, every year! Spring, happens. Not necessarily earth-shattering news. Well I hope not anyway.
While there are some times when it feels like spring will never arrive, (like this year), I can guarantee that it will definitely arrive, eventually. How and when is usually a mystery. Especially up here in Canada. The land of the never-ending winter.
Spring is a time of renewal. A fresh start. A new beginning. When you live in a place that has four specific seasons (some harsher than others), the entrance of each one is evident. Spring can come in like a lion or a lamb, but it will always come in.
Many people would likely say that spring is their favourite season. While it isn’t mine, I can definitely understand why so many others choose it as a favourite.
There is just something energizing about a time of growth and renewal. In a land with distinct seasons, spring is a time when things seem to dramatically change overnight. One day there may be snow on the ground, and just a few days later every brown lawn begins to show the new growth of green grass. Or those tulips start to pop up so quickly you know they have just been waiting for this very moment. Waiting for the right opportunity to stretch up to the sky and bloom.
Just like the tulips, spring is a wonderful time for us to have a chance to grow, refresh, renew or restart. Spring can feel like a time when we are just so exhausted coming out of a weary, long winter, or maybe it’s a time of increased energy looking forward to being outside or the upcoming enjoyment of summer.
Here are some ideas on how to get a jump start on the new season and find some ways to get a restart:
- Spring cleaning and de-cluttering – Aggh I can hear it in your voice. Cleaning, Yuck. I know I get it. But spring cleaning can be a great way to get rid of things taking up space and give you room to try something new like a project or habit. It’s pretty great for mental health too.
- Start a new habit – I know I have some bad habits. Maybe you do too. This is a great chance to start a new habit. A good habit. Maybe get rid of a bad habit that needs to go too.
- Journal-Yes, journaling. It’s back. I posted a challenge in December to begin a gratitude journal. The post is called “Gratitude-Writing It Down.” If you didn’t take me up on that challenge then, maybe this is your chance.
- Plant a garden, pot or windowsill – Yes, connecting with dirt is so great. And planting something that will grow and take root is so fulfilling. Plus in the end your might get some tasty vegetables to add to your meal or beautiful flowers to make your home sparkle.
- Do something nice for someone – This is a pretty self-explanatory one. Doing something nice for someone else can absolutely brighten their day, but you might be surprised at how you feel when you do something great for someone else.
- Learn something new or challenge yourself – Since spring is a time for growth and renewal, how better to do that than to challenge yourself to stretch and grow in new ways. While your plants are growing, you can too!
So I hope you are challenged with those ways to refresh, restart and renew, but if you aren’t yet, here are some quotes to inspire you further.
“Each day the world is born anew for him who takes it rightly.” —James Russell Lowell
“I can hardly wait for tomorrow; it means a new life for me each and every day.” —Stanley Kunitz
“The dry seasons in life do not last. The spring rains will come again.” —Sarah Ban Breathnach
“If we had no winter, the spring would not be so pleasant.” – Anne Bradstreet”
“Spring adds new life and new joy to all that is.” – Jessica Harrelson
“Some old-fashioned things like fresh air and sunshine are hard to beat.” – Laura Ingalls Wilder
So friend, whatever you choose to do to shake off all of the barriers of winter, I am rooting for you. Praying that you find refreshment that comes from making changes and new beginnings. Changes in season and changes in your life.

Well Mel, I did some decluttering a few days ago. Not planned , just because I was looking for something and as I searched I threw out a lot of unneeded articles that should have been gone years ago!!
And I never found what I was looking for but it felt good to get rid of that clutter.
