Stories. Some people open up a conversation by asking, “So what’s your story?” or “Tell me a story.” What would you say to that? Would that strike fear in to your soul? I admit there have been moments in my life when the fear of doing that was tangible.
Do you have a story to tell? I would say you do. We all have a story to tell. Even if we don’t think we do.
But what would your story say? Who are the other characters in your story. Is it a story that you think is best left alone, or a story that would benefit someone who needs to hear it?
Do you think your story would put someone to sleep? Maybe a tale best read before bed to bring on sleep much quicker? ZZZZZZZzzzzzz
Or do you think your story would bring on bad dreams if someone read it before bed? Does it terrify you? Would it terrify them?
People have valuable stories to share. It can be hard to open up and share some things that we have gone through, and things that have happened to us that are very personal, difficult, sensitive or even embarrassing. Yes, embarrassing. We all have at least one of those stories. Right?
Stories make up the chapters of everyone’s life. Who they are, where they have come from, what they have learned, and so many other things.
Maybe instead of wanting to share your story with others, why don’t you have someone share their story with you.
The power of story can be an amazing gift to the storyteller and absolutely to the listener.
So friend what’s your story?
Maybe you don’t know what your story is? Or you haven’t thought about it in those terms?
We all go through ups and downs in our lives. Some of those ups are higher than others and some of those downs are lower than others. Think about those ups and downs in your life. What successes have you had? What accomplishments?
What about failures? Or devastating things you have gone through?
Things that have impacted you greatly. Things that have changed who you are. Times that brought you to tears and times that brought laughter and joy.
Lessons we have learned shape the story of our lives. What lessons have you learned? Have you learned a lesson from someone that had a great impact on you and changed the direction of your life? Changed a big decision you made?
These are the plot lines of our stories.
The story of our life will have multiple chapters. Some chapters you might feel to be snoozers. One that will put anyone to sleep. But even in that boring or un-adventurous story, there may be one person you can impact if you share it.
We often under-value what we have been through and how it can impact others. I urge you to stop thinking that way. We all have value to add to others lives when we share what we have been through and what we have learned on that journey.
I know I have learned so much when someone opens up their heart and shares the chapters in their story. There is so much that can come out of that. Lessons to learn, warning signs to avoid and words that can change our future.
I feel very privileged to be able to share my story with you all on this blog. It is an opportunity I do not take for granted. I am so grateful to each one of you who has commented on a post or spoken to me about what I am doing here. Thank you so much.
So friend, will you share your story? I urge you to be willing to do it. You may never learn how hearing your story impacted someone else, but it is still worth it. God may use your words in unexpected ways in other people’s lives. I pray you have the courage to tell others what you have been through. Or give someone else the space to share their story with you.
