Does it ever feel like other people change and take action quickly, and you can’t even get your act together enough to change a little bit?
I definitely feel that way sometimes. It’s like I change direction with the speed and circumference of a massive cruise ship and others shift gears and change direction with the speed and agility of a speed boat.
Taking action and making changes can just take so long sometimes.
I know, I know, you can’t look at someone else and see everything that they are doing or are affected by. But I am positive that each and everyone one of us has looked at someone else and said “how are they doing that” or “wow, that looked so easy.”
It’s probably fair to say that the glacier like change we sometimes see in our lives comes from the common default that we have of being opposed to change. Our natural state is not liking change, at least for most of us, I think.
But even when we are excited about change, it can often take FOREVER to happen.
I guess that it also depends on the change. Some major changes in our lives can take forever because of the nature of the change, and what needs to happen to complete it or finish the steps forward.
There are also situations where one small change is all that is needed and it’s a ripple effect waiting for the end result or sometimes even for other people to play their part in whatever is needing to happen.
So there are lots of situations. But focusing on what we have control of is where we will stay.
It can be so hard to not take a peek over at someone else’s life and make judgments or assumptions. It’s ok, you can admit that you do it. I will definitely admit that I do it. Comparing is a trap we can so easily fall in to.
We look over and see how someone else has made a change in their life and it just looks so effortless and quick. The dramatic change took no time at all. Or it was just so easy.
Ok friend, stop right there. I know that you know, that things are not always as they appear to be. I am speaking to myself here just as much as you.
Maybe it’s kind of like looking in the side view mirror when you are in a vehicle. The message printed and stuck on the mirror was “Objects in mirror are closer than they appear.” In other words, even when looking directly at the mirror you might not be seeing things as they actually are.
Now when you know that, you can take appropriate action and make appropriate decisions. But if you don’t know that, you might make decisions that aren’t in your best interest.
So friend, I guess I will leave you with this, don’t be afraid of change. Even if it takes a while to finish and get you to the place you were aiming for and where you are supposed to be. And don’t look around and play the comparison game. Your life is vastly different than others, so keep your eyes on the prize.
I am speaking you myself just as much as you when I say that some changes can be swift, but quite a few changes can take a long time. Some of the best changes come over time, and you and I both know that the wait can be worth it.
Remember friend, I am praying for you, that you will have the courage to make the changes you need to, no matter how long it takes or the frustration that might overtake you. Whether it’s like a speed boat or a cruise ship.
