Why?
In a world that values certain things. when you go against the grain it can really confuse people. Really confuse them.
I’ll drill it down a little more specifically for you.
I make many of decisions in my life after factoring in my health to those decisions. I have really come to value my health and the high level of health I am always working towards and to a certain degree I have achieved. Still working at this every day.
When some people look at my life they will probably view it through a different lens. A lens based on their experience or beliefs. Makes sense that people would do that right?
Looking at my life and the decisions I make through a perspective like that may just completely baffle someone else.
That’s ok. I’m ok with that. Why? Because I am the one walking through this life in my circumstances. Not anyone else.
I don’t choose to do the same things as many other people.
I will likely be the one to sneak out of some event early so I can get an extra hour of sleep. Don’t get me wrong I can party hardy past 9 pm like the rest of you rabble rousers if I want to, but most of the time I choose to identify with those in an age range higher than me for bedtime.
I have also chosen to make certain decisions with my career based on my health. If you look around you, you will likely see someone who might have some health issues because of their career path, their job. Even if they won’t admit it. They might be crushing it at their job, but struggling with their health. Their choice is different than mine and I am A-ok with that.
Our culture values climbing the ladder of success at all costs.
My view of success looks different.
I don’t make decisions about my health based on someone else’s perception of me or someone else’s experience. That could get a little crazy. I make decisions about my health based on what I determine is best and most likely based on some difficult lesson I have learned before. Honestly I am still learning some of these difficult lessons by not making the wisest choice.
Over the years people have asked my why I don’t do this or that for my career or this or that in my personal life. Quite honestly one of the first filters I make most decisions through (not the only filter of course) is thinking about how it will affect my health. Could the result be bad for me right at the beginning or possibly lead to health destruction over time?
Frankly I’m very unwilling to destroy or erode the health I put so much effort in to for something that may not provide much positive return in my life in other ways. Some jobs would do that.
Playing this out in our lives will look much different between you and me. I can’t tell you what is right or wrong for you about this. I can only provide my experience and suggest you think about these things.
Do a little self evaluation.
Is something you want to do going to set you off track with your normal health routine like how or when you sleep? But is it going to invest in your physical health or mental health in another way?
I’m pretty diligent about thinking through things, all things in my life and making decisions based on that process. So even if something looks like a rash or impulsive decision I’ve made, I can assure that it probably isn’t. I have thought it through and moved ahead based on a choice, my choice. I’ve worked through the pros and cons of it. Now it just sounds like I overthink everything. Hhhmmmm maybe sometimes.
Maybe you could go to a concert or a sporting event with a friend. If you haven’t seen this friend for quite a while and this person is someone you really enjoy spending time with, and you know you will have a great chat and a fun time together, maybe the later night is worth the sacrifice for the positive benefits of having an enjoyable and memorable time with each other.
This one can be a tricky one for me. My normal bedtime starts with a number less than 10 🫣. So I regularly have to work through the overall value and consequences of my upcoming plans.
There are just some things that are occasionally worth a few less winks that night. At least in my books anyway.
So friends, as you might have already guessed this comes down to (drum roll) yup, choices. Are you getting tired of me always talking about choices. I hope not because it’s just going to keep coming. 😊
This means making small choices every day and sometimes making really big decisions more rarely. All of these play into your overall health.
I think it’s good to make choices about what you do in your life for career and your personal life based on how it will affect your health today and in the future. Knowing how different things affect your health in good and bad ways will help you make informed decisions.
Ah choices. 😉
I can’t tell you what’s right for you and you might not really know either in certain circumstances, but if you think about it and pay attention over time you will figure it out.
I realize there will be some situations you may need to be in that won’t be ideal for your health. Me too. But that doesn’t mean you can’t make small changes to be a bit healthier. Maybe, hopefully.
As always friend, I will be praying for you to have the ability to make informed decisions about your health.
