A personal story. You have one, I have one. Crazy how that works, right?
I recently was asked to share my health journey with a group of people in a webinar. Not really sure now many people were on the call. Probably between 60-70.
Every time I share my story with anyone whether it’s one on one or speaking to a larger group I do not take that opportunity for granted. It is a privilege to speak to others and share what I have been through and some things that I have learned along the way.
I was reminded this most recent time just how much I have come through and just how difficult some of those things actually were. I think it can be a common experience to forget so many of the details of what we have lived through after it ends.
The depth of what we have come through and the specificity of what we have lived through mostly gone from memory. When I was preparing for this video presentation, I did take some time to go through and remember things I had forgotten.
The further away from something we get, the more the lines blur and things bleed together so our minds can forget all of the little details. The more I worked to recall all of the things I have been through, the more that flooded back to my mind.
As I shared on that call that day, I was hit pretty strongly with how I probably don’t share my story often enough. I am more likely to down play what I have been through and maybe down play the impact my story can have on someone else.
I think that can be a mistake. My story can impact someone else and your story can also impact someone else. And it might not be the part of the story that we might guess people would connect with or what we think are the big moments.
It could even be the smallest thing that we casually mention while sharing that has the greatest interest or significance for someone listening.
I have been so grateful for the comments and encouragement since I shared with the group that day. So grateful. We so easily undervalue what we have to say and how it can touch others who have shared similar circumstances or even those who have experienced something different.
Our life story is being crafted each day. A new page continually being written. You may not feel like you have much of a story to share from what you have been through up to this point. But you might currently be going through something right now or even be heading into a new chapter of your life that becomes a part of your story you will share and others will find value in down the road.
There is so much benefit in hearing other people’s life lessons and journeys.
I have written a post about our personal stories before. If you want to check it out, you can find it here.
So friend I want to encourage you to think about how someone might find great value in hearing your journey, your story. Don’t underestimate it’s worth to another person. This is my challenge for you.
